What Is Creationism?

Yea, its about time getting into the model of creationism or specifically Young Earth Creationism.

I believe that the time is ripe and perfect to discuss about what creationist really believes or what creationism stands for. I do not shy away the fact that I’m a Young Earth Creationist despite the scorns and ridicules coming from evolutionists.

Evolutionists can scorn or deliberately ridicule creationists all they want, but the fact still remains: evolution is not science! The darwinian theory of molecule-to-man has been a major failure within hard sciences. The whole enterprise of evolution remains as an enigma and a stumbling block to life sciences in spite what other thinks to the contrary!

Darwinian evolution isn’t the only viable option when it comes to the question of the origin. Biblical Creationism, as rightly understood, can compete against other competing theories.

Before Intelligent Design and Progressive Creationism became a household name, fathers of Creationism, advocates, such as Drs. Henry M. Morris, John Whitcomb, and Duane Gish, has already been on the frontline taking heat in the battle for the truth by warring and debating against ardent evolutionists.

These men were the real pioneers of modern day creationism. This alone surprises me that these great men of God haven’t given enough credits by other so called creationists!

Time and space won’t allow me so I’ll just write a short summary of other views of creationism. There are divergence within the fields of creationism that can be categorised as follows.

i). Intelligent Design: Intelligent Design main proponents (Philip Johnson, Bill Dembski, David Berlinski) believes that the entire cosmos is designed by a supernatural being. The existence of all organism or life came about by an intelligent fiat (as opposed to Darwinism) but this agent or creator doesn’t have to be the God of the Bible. Also, ID proposes an Old Earth view and some type of evolution.

ii). Progressive Creationism: What is a progressive creationist? A progressive creationist is the one who believes that the whole universe (including us) were created by God. As Christians, progressive creationists are not biblical literalist with their interpretation of the first chapter of Genesis, therefore, argues for Day-Age view (billions of years old) of the Earth. The advocates (notably Hugh Ross and co.) for this theory believes that God created a human-like creatures before Adam and Eve.

iii). Theistic Evolutionism: Like most typical evolutionists, theistic evolutionists propose (Baptist theologian, Augustus H. Strong and geneticist, Francis Collins, etc, are major contenders for TE) for and believes in evolution. But, unlike Darwinist evolutionists — who denies in the existence of a Personal Creator — TE, on the other hand, believes that God created and guided the whole process of evolution i.e. God created by means of evolution through millions of years . Most theistic evolutionists maintains and defends Old Earth geology.

Okay, what does creationists believes? Or, better yet, what does creationism entails?

The Earth Is Young

The main presupposition for creationists is, of course, the Bible. Biblical creationism believes that God created the universe out of nothing (creatio ex nihilo). No, God did not create from preexistent material. In contrasting with the evolutionists theory of the origin of universe is either the universe has always existed or it created itself out of nothing. In response, the material universe could not have existed from all eternity.

We all know from our own experiences that all physical objects tends to decay. Also, the idea of self-creating universe out of nothing is, what shall we say, HUMBUG! Ex nihilo nihil fit (nothing comes from nothing)!

Not only that creationists believes that God created the universe out of nothing, they also confirms how the Christian Scripture tells us that God created the material universe in six consecutive days (this is almost a week). The word “day” is plain as a melting butter on our warm sandwich.

The word “day” in Genesis means yom in Hebrew tongue which simply implies 24-hours day e.i. one solar day. Nothing more nothing less. If Young Earth creationists has properly interpreted the word “day” in Genesis then there really is no reason in supposing that the material universe is billions of years old.

Creationists believes and argues that the earth is not billions of years old. Young Earth Creationism (YEC) affirms firmly that the entire cosmos or universe if you prefer, is younger than what evolutionists have in mind. Creationists proposes a young earth. YEC estimation of the earth is only about 6 to 10 thousand of years old.

Despite antagonism against the model, creationists deduction, about the age of the earth, didn’t come to fruition because they happened to be evangelical Christians, therefore, biased and opposes science (this is the fancies of the opponents)!

On the contrary, these evangelical Christians are scientists and are experts within their fields who have a love for God and passion for science. Anyway, the reason why YECs denies the conventional radiometric dating is because the method of carbon dating has flaws and is unreliable.

The Origin Of Life

Creationists doesn’t only disagrees with the age of earth, they also vehemently disagrees the current reigning theory and studies of the origin of life. As you probably read and learned from your highschool textbooks concerning the issue how life started in the first place, there is no doubt that your textbook only represents one theory: Evolution.

And even if the editor or writer concerning the subject at hand, mentions creationism, what you actually read is a worst caricature and embellishment against the science of creationism. But this is to be expected of course!

So how did life started?

Evolutionists doesn’t have a conclusive theory much less any evidence that supports the idea of the origin of life. Most of their theories of the origin of life often conflicts and contradicts with each other. One theory prevails that life started 3.7 billion of years ago in a ‘preorganic soup,’ where a heterotrophic bacteria inhabiting the sea and absorbing the organic material that was being created by the reactions of earth at the time was the first signs of life on earth. Most of these studies are nothing but pure speculations, and unsubstantiated by empirical data. No substantive evidence to support this extraordinary claim.

The creationist model of the genesis of life then?

God. Yes, God is the axiom of all life there is. There is no other viable explanations of the genesis of life but God. Omne vivum ex vivo, life must come only from life! If you’re an atheist reading this article and disagrees with me then explain to me how an inanimate matter can possibly produce life as we know it. Evolutionists believes that life from non life is still being created today, while creationists, on the other hand, believes, that after God ceased from his creative activity from material to life, life is not being created this present day. Henry M. Morris, in his classic book, Scientific Creationism said,

There is no slightest scientific evidence that life can come from non-life. The creation model emphasizes the unique origin of life, at the creative word of a living Creator. The scientific law of cause and effect requires the First Cause of life to be living!¹

Natural Selection

The father of modern medicine, and creationist, Louis Pasteur, had a similar musing when it comes to the origin of life, ‘Microscopic beings must come into the world from parents similar to themselves.’ What he meant by this is that life must come from life itself!² Dead matter, or any kind of matter there is, cannot produce organism or life for that matter.

Let us continue with our discussion. The terminology and idea of ‘Natural Selection,’ did not started with Charles Darwin, but by a chemist and zoologist, Edward Blyth (1810–1873), who has propounded this idea long before Darwin came to the scene.

What is natural selection according to creationism?

Natural selection is a fact, as confirmed by both models (creation/evolution). However, creationism in juxtaposition with evolutionism differs with the conclusions significantly. According to the creationist model of natural selection, Jonathan Sarfati, explains,

…creationists, starting from the Bible, believe that God created different kinds of organisms which reproduced “after their kinds” (Gen. 1:11-12,21,24-25). Each of these kinds was created with a vast amount of information. There was enough variety in the information in the original creatures so their descendants could adopt to a wide variety of environments.³

God’s revelation tells us that, He created different kinds of animals (bear, coyote, wolf, chimpanzee, etc,) and that reproduced (father and mother bear had a baby bear) after their kinds. As, Sarfati, informs us, that God created these reproductive organisms who already possesses genetic traits that would enable, lets say, baby bear’s descendant to adopt new environments (baby bear’s great grand son, polar bear in the Antarctic while its cousins, grizzly bear lives in North America).

Baby bear’s descendants, however, cannot add new genetic information that will allow its great grandson, polar bear’s descendants, to generate or evolve to a wolf (Canis lupus)! This is because, according to creationists, natural selection by itself doesn’t procreate new genetic information. Creationist, Nicholas Comninellis says,

It is understandable that the fastest, most agile, and strongest creatures will survive longer than the sick, the weakened, and crippled. But while natural selection may explain the survival of the fittest within a particular group of plants or animals, it does not explain transformation from one species into another. Actually, nature selection is conservative, not creative.4

In short, God ‘preprogrammed’ His creatures by equipping with genes that will enable the creatures to adopt different kind of environments. Thus, natural selection supports producing only variation within kind. This teaching contradicts evolutionists notion of natural selection.
